What to watch forⓘ

  1. Hazardous violations are open, including mold and pests.
    Worth checking · AI-assistedⓘ
Look in hallways, stairwells, and other shared areas for signs of pests or mold.
    details ▸

Deadlines vary by condition: immediate for heat and hot water, 14 days for self-closing doors, 21 days for lead paint, window guards, mold, and mice, cockroaches or rats, and 24 hours for everything else. They run from the date the owner is served, and mark when civil penalties can be sought in Housing Court. They are not a promise the condition is fixed by then. If the owner does not fix it, HPD can send its own contractor and bill them.

    • —Mold & pests — Dirty or poorly maintained common areas, garbage accumulation, and inadequate building cleaning services.

The violation list below shows which conditions are open and when each was cited. If one in your own apartment is still unaddressed, call 311.

  • Heat or hot water problems reported in the last five years.
    Worth checking · AI-assistedⓘ
Turn on a faucet in the kitchen and bathroom and feel whether hot water arrives, and check radiators or baseboards for warmth when the heat is on.
    details ▸

Heat is required October 1 through May 31: at least 68°F from 6am to 10pm when it is below 55°F outside, and 62°F overnight whatever the temperature outside. Hot water must be at least 120°F, 24 hours a day, all year.

If your apartment is colder than that, file a complaint with 311 and keep the service request number so you can track it. Never use a gas oven or range for heat, which can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.
